Spetses

Spetses Island Greece – Local Information

Spetses is a pine-covered island located in the Saronic gulf, close to the southern tip of mainland Argolida. It is 27 km² in size with a population of approximately 4000 habitants, who mainly live in the town of Spetses.

Spetses is famous for its maritime history, especially during the War of Independence in 1821 against the Ottoman Empire, and for its traditional boat yards in the old harbour. The island has many sights including museums (Hadjiyannis-Mexis and Bouboulina), monasteries (Aghios Nikolaos, Aghioi Pantes), churches, sea-captain mansions and the Dapia harbour (paved with black and white pebbles). Located behind the Dapia is the mansion of Sotirios Anargyros, a wealthy national benefactor, who after returning from the USA in 1900 planted the pine forests, constructed the coastal ring road, built the Poseidonion Hotel and established the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School.

Spetses has many beautiful beaches, the most popular being Aghia Marina, Xylokeriza, Aghioi Anargyroi (location of the Bekiris Cave), Aghia Paraskevi, Zogeria, Vrellos, Ligoneri, Kaiki, Aghios Mammas and Aghios Nikolaos. The majority of these beaches have organised facilities and some have watersports. Transport options on and around the island are by bicycle, motorbike, horse-drawn carriage, taxi, bus, sea-taxi and caïque. Private cars are not permitted on Spetses.

Spetses celebrates many events throughout the year, the busiest being Easter and Armata, a week-long festival in September culminating in the re-enactment of a sea battle and afterwards a firework display. Local food specialties, including amygdalota (small almond cakes with icing sugar) and fish ‘a la spetsiota’, are available in the numerous pastry shops and restaurants of Spetses.
